She puts on her make-up
For who? She doesn't know
Step one, two, three
She ties her corset
She zips up her dress
Step one, two, three
She looks in the mirror
Her face now masked in silver
Puts on her best smile
Step one, two, three
One, two, three, four

She twirls in the ballroom
Her dress follows in a whisper
Step one, two, three
Her moves are graceful
As she glides through the Waltz
Step one, two, three
What she doesn't know is that she is being watched
By the masked gentleman in the corner
Step one, two, three
One, two, three, four

The gentleman walks over
Bows to the girl masked in silver
She curtsies with a bowed head
And they smoothly slide into place
Silently they stand poised
Waiting for the music to play
Step one, two, three
One, two, three, four

Her hand clasped in his
His firmly pressed onto her lower back
Step one, two, three
Her heart begins to flutter
As the music begins to play
Step one, two, three
He doesn't seem to notice
He doesn't seem to mind
Step one, two, three
One, two, three, four

Her hand begins to sweat
As the other trembles upon his shoulder
Step one, two, three
Her steps become lost
And occasionally skipped
Step one, two, three
He doesn't seem to notice
He doesn't seem to mind
Step one, two, three
One, two, three, four

Her hand matches his
His arm passionately around her waist
Step one, two, three
Her head rests a top his shoulder
Her hand gently stroking his neck
Step one, two, three
His hand hand matches hers
His touch melts to lust
She doesn't seem to notice
She doesn't seem to mind
Step one, two, three
One, two, three, four

Their steps, they mesh
Their dance, a syncranized glide
Step one, two, three
Their hearts they beat in unison
While they think the same thoughts
Step one, two, three
He pulls her in tighter
And their touch becomes warm
She whispers 'I love you'
He kisses her cheek
Step one, two, three
One, two, three, four

Their grip becomes loose
Their touch cold
Step one, two, three
The music slows
And eventually stops
The masked gentlemen leaves
Without a word, without a bow
The girl no longer masked in silver stands silently
Her dress unzipped
Her corset untied
Her face gleams with silent tears
Just another night alone at the Masquerade Ball

I actually had the idea for this poem for almost a year now, I just never really had the motivation to finish it until now. Had to write another free verse poem, mainly focusing on imagery, for my Creative Writing class so I decided to try and finish this one.

The whole gist to this poem is losing one's innocence in the world around them, and then I decided to take that further and pointing it into a waltz dance at a ball. Enjoy.

You know, this really reminds me of a scene in Romeo and Juliet.... Anyways, nice poem. I especially like the tempo that seems go with it so well even though it's free verse

"Well then, I can't allow this to become another
one of those times that I'm left in the cold, dead.
There's no compromise,
just another tie I know I need to sever."

Alone he walks along the shore
Shes calling him to drag him to her icy depths
but he cannot resist her, as she softly whispers to him through the breeze that carries her melody

Interesting.

Mostly boredom.

Yeah, it reminded me of that, too. I love that movie. Thanks for your comment :)

Well, I have never seen the movie [actually, I am watching an old version of it now though], but I do like the book/screenplay.

Oh, by the way, "SelectiveDamage" is a pretty awesome username, and Anti-Flag is a pretty awesome band :D Just so you know ;P

The old version of Romeo and Juliet is pretty good, besides the fact that the guy who plays Romeo can't act for shit. But the one with Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio is amazing. The fact that they set it in a modern society, but keep the Shakespearean language just makes it so much better. HTe version of Hamlet with Ethan Hawk is really good too.

Oh thanks. Anti-Flag rocks my socks. I'm seeing them again at the Metro on April 17th.
